Brushstrokes on Silk: An Introduction to Creating Wearable Silk Art

Class Description: This one day silk painting workshop will give you a valuable foundation to begin your new obsession creating wearable silk art. Participants will focus on basic techniques and processes of silk painting. Various techniques such as salt, alcohol, resist, color mixing, and the flow of dye on silk will be introduced as you create an 11” x 11” and a choice of a 14” x 72” or 30” x 30” silk scarf.

Participants will also learn how to use marker as a resist to create beautiful designs. Patterns will be provided, however participants can choose their own image to work from.

This silk workshop, which uses non-toxic silk paints is simple enough for absolute beginners, yet is also an exciting way for more experienced painters to transfer their talents onto silk. Once the setting process is complete, participants will leave this experience with two beautiful, wearable silk artworks. This is a time to nurture your artistic side, all skill levels are welcome! 

What to bring: Apron, Old Clothes (the dyes stain), Disposable Gloves (optional). Bring your lunch or choose from one of the many available restaurants in the Arboretum.

Ages 12+ are welcome.
